In 1994 DGA began a program of issuing Winneshiek County Pioneer Certificates to anyone with a direct ancestor in Winneshiek County in 1856 or earlier. This was initiated as a project for the 1996 Iowa State Sesquicentennial. These certificates are still available.

Ask for our application form and submit supporting evidence of your direct ancestor’s residency in the county. Copies of acceptable sources of proof may include federal or state census records for 1856 or earlier; land records — a copy of the land deed, county history, marriage records, will or probate records. The certificate costs $5 per copy and will be mailed to you or you can pick it up at the DGA Center.

Decorah Genealogy Association welcomes requests for programs to be presented at area nursing homes. Residents of the nursing homes are a resource for genealogy research and are important to us. We are happy to provide programs for their entertainment.

Decorah Genealogy Association works closely with many other organizations in the greater northeast Iowa area. We also exchange newsletters with other genealogy and historical societies across the United States. These newsletters are available for your review in our research center.

If you would like to become a member of Decorah Genealogy Association, please contact us. Whether you live in the area or are a descendant of someone who lived here or passed through on the way to somewhere else, we welcome you.
